"There's always a BUT" Edition
Last week's Marketoonist strip got me thinking about all the things we're worrying about AI.
And there are a lot of them: job displacement, ethical issues like biased algorithms and privacy invasion, security risks from hacking, existential threats from superintelligent AI, loss of human control, social inequality, economic disruptions, dependence on AI, impacts on human identity and relationships, and environmental consequences from energy consumption.
Ufffffff. Speaking about introducing the (BIG) elephant in the room.
Listen, we are humans and we worry. That has helped us run away from lions (or elephants) when we needed to.
And of course these things are important, and need to be discussed. That "but", followed by something negative, is what has helped us survive.
But what I try to do is: also follow it by something positive.
Social inequality BUT also democratization of knowledge.
Impact on relationships BUT also more time for human connection.
Job displacement BUT also automatization of repetitive tasks, higher-value work.
You get the idea. Try it for a few days.
I can't do it all the time, to be fair.
But focusing on possibility helps me have a better relationship with the biggest technological change in Modern History.
I still worry about it, every day.
BUT...
